Sensual Massage Strokes

While you do not have to be a professional massage therapist to give a sensual massage to your partner, knowing the stokes that they use and how to apply them will make your massage even better. While there are many different types of massage strokes used by massage therapist, to do a great sensual massage you only need to know four. They are Gliding, Kneading, Friction, and Percussion. Each stroke has its own purpose and is chosen for a specific reason. The giver uses a particular type of stroke depending on what their partner wants or needs from the massage, some strokes can have a calming, and sedative effect or be refreshing and stimulating depending on the speed and pressure with which it is applied.

When beginning your massage, lay your hand on your partner don’t drop it. your strokes should blend smoothly flowing into each other creating one continuous flow of sensual pleasure running over the body.  It is important to remember when giving a sensual massage to maintain contact with your partner at all times, so keeping your oil near is essential. The strokes are ideally done with firmness towards the heart, and with lightness when moving away from it to provide the full benefits of the massage. The massage giver should keep their hands and wrists relaxed. If your hands are tense, your partner will be able to feel it this can interfere with their relaxation. Sensual massage can increase your flexibility because it stretches the ligaments and tendons, and relaxes the muscles. It also helps flush the body tissues of metabolic waste such as uric, and lactic acid. Massage causes oxygen rich blood to flow through the body. Since in the veins and lymph system do not have a pump like the heart, they rely on muscle movement to move fluids. A massage is an excellent way to help these systems work more efficiently.  

A Sensual massage is best while lying naked on a massage table, but the floor works fine if some padding is placed to keep your partner comfortable. Towels and pillows are needed for warmth and support. This helps to keep weight off the head and neck. Massage oil is used to ensure the smoothness of the strokes. To help you maintain contact with your partner, make sure that all of your equipment is within easy reach while giving the massage.

Before and during the sensual massage listen to your partner and do what they ask. This is a time for them to relax and enjoy the sensations around them. Make sure that they are not doing something else that will distract them from the experience. limiting your conversation to guidance will help them to relax and never comment on how tense or tight they are this is distraction and will only keep them tense just use the strokes you learn to help them relax and give them pleasure.

The Gliding Stroke

The first stroke to learn is the gliding stroke. It is the foundation of a sensual massage and is one of the most relaxing and sensual strokes. A long smooth flowing open handed stroke it slides over the skin and feels soft and fluid and is almost guaranteed to bring a sigh of pleasure from you partner. The gliding stroke is used to apply oil and connect with your partner’s body. The sensual massage is started and ended with these strokes. Gliding massage strokes can be light or deep and are able to be performed on any part of the body. You can use your palm, fingers, or forearms to perform gliding strokes.

 To do a good gliding stroke you need to make sure your hands are relaxed. If your fingers close together your hands are tense. Let your fingers spread apart since any tension in the hands will be easily felt by your partner. Pressure should come from the whole hand and be distributed evenly through your hand from thumb to little finger. keep your  hands soft letting them melt and mold to the shape of the body

To really get the most out of this stroke, you need to slow down. Generally, people tend to do this stroke too fast. Start slow and then go slower than you think. By the time you finish with this stroke your partner will feel relaxed and supple.

While you’re doing this stroke, notice any knots or tense areas in the muscles. This is the time where you listen with your hands. Tuning in to your partners body, will help you decide how to give your partner a more enjoyable experience as you continue with the rest of the massage.

The gliding stroke is great for warming and calming your partner, but it is also very sensual for the massage giver. You can enjoy the feel and shape of your partner’s body, as your hands glide over them. Allow yourself to really immerse yourself in the sensation and connection you are creating.

A variation of the gliding stroke known as Feathering or Raking and is an excellent way to end a massage. To do this, curl your fingers and using only your fingertips, go from top to bottom. Use very light pressure, but be careful not to tickle during feathering. This stroke is very sensual and will send thrilling shivers through the body, as it stimulates the nerve endings close to the surface.

Some of the deeper variations of the gliding stroke are pulling and wringing.

Pulling is a stroke done on the muscles of the arms and legs. it is done with both hands.  To do this simply wrap one hand around the limb and gently pull as you move your hand down to the end.  As your hand reach the wrist or ankle, start at the top of the limb with your other hand and then continue to alternating tem with each other, when done the muscles are pulled and stretched to loosen them.

Wringing is done on the torso, the arms and the legs. The hands are placed on either side of the area being massaged and are moved in an alternating forward and backward motion, moving in an upward direction this stroke is usually done quickly, so oil is essential to prevent burning. Wringing can be a very invigorating stroke for your partner.

The Friction Stroke

Our instinct tells us that rubbing feels good and people will often rub sore or injured parts of their bodies to feel better.  Friction strokes are great for sore spots and loosening small knots in the muscles. It is a deep stroke and done with pressure, using the thumbs and fingertips moving in tiny circles along the area being massaged. Since it is a penetrating stroke it should only be used after the muscles are warmed and relaxed to be effective. You may also need to use an anchor hand to steady the body or part being worked on. Some people love this stroke, but others find it too painful. Communication is key when you perform this stroke to determine the amount of pressure you can use or if you should avoid this stroke completely. 

There are three different varieties of the friction stroke – circular stripping, and cross-fiber.

 Circular friction – This is the most common friction stroke and can really get things moving. Using your fingertips, thumbs, knuckles or even your elbow, Place your hand on the spot that you will be working on and slowly make small circles. Start with a medium pressure and then increase it. Move from the outside and work in to the sore spot or knot. Make these small circles in the whole area you are working.

Stripping – This stroke follows the muscle fibers.  Think of the area you will work and imagine the direction that the muscle fibers are running. Use medium pressure with the heel of the hand on larger areas, or with the thumbs on smaller areas. Slowly move it from end to end of that muscle in a line. Work on the same spot a few times then move on to the next one. Continue doing this until you’ve covered the entire muscle. this stoke is done with the purpose of stretching the muscle and increasing blood circulation. 

Cross-fiber stroke - This stroke is used when you are working deep muscles and tendons. To do the cross-fiber stoke you will be using your thumb or fingers to work across the muscle fibers in short and deep strokes.

The Kneading Stroke

If you ask someone to massage your shoulders for you they will usually use this stroke. Kneading works best on the large meaty muscles of the body. Its purpose is relaxing muscle tension and getting the blood circulating deep in the muscle. it is meant to gently lift muscles up and away from the bone. Then the muscles are gently rolled and squeezed.  It is always done firmly, take a hold of the muscle being massaged and then press it between the fingers and the heel of the hands, like kneading dough. The kneading stoke can be done with two hands, one hand, or between the fingers in a rolling type motion since this is a deep muscle stroke make sure the muscles are warm and relaxed before doing this stroke. Experience and communication will help to keep pressure firm but not painful.

To do the kneading stroke lay your hands on the muscle you want to massage,. Keep your fingers close together and your thumbs extended. The space between your two hands should make a triangle. With one hand, bring the thumb towards the fingers; you are closing your hand by pressing the muscle between your thumb and fingers. Your fingers should remain still and act as an anchor for you thumb. Keep a constant rhythm and hold your fingers together. Moving in tight circles, use both hands on one spot. Now let your thumb and forefingers slide off the muscle and as the first hand releases perform the same grasping action with your other hand. Alternate doing this motion with both hands. The thumb is the secret. Feel the muscle roll of off you fingertips. When done correctly, the feeling rolls across the body.

Make sure you stay relaxed when kneading and don’t overuse it. The kneading action is a great way to loosen tired muscles, but the repetitive motion can be very tiring if you do it too much. Your fingers will get worn out the quickest, and you need to use them as little as possible. Make sure you always pay attention to how you feel when you give a massage.

Plucking – Plucking is done by lifting small areas of the muscle using the fingertips. The lifted muscle is then gently squeezed before it is allowed to slide back.  You should work along the grain of the muscle since working cross grain can be painful.

The Percussion Stroke

Percussion is a quick stroke that is light, fast-paced and stimulating, where the body is struck in a quick, repetitive way. It invigorates the muscles and increases superficial blood flow. This is the massage technique you often see on movies and television shows. It is important not to do percussion on areas where the bone is close to the skin. Never do it over the spine or kidneys. Don’t do it to someone who is pregnant. It is not appropriate to do it for too long. This will over-stimulate the area and annoy the person you’re massaging. The strokes should be like raindrops on a still pond not a crashing wave. You don’t want your partner to feel like you’re trying to beat them up.

There are variations to this stroke, though the variations are just how you hold hand is when you strike:  hacking with the side of the hand, pounding with an open or closed fist, or cupping. Percussion is a good stroke to use on tense, spamming or cramping muscles

Hacking Using the sides of the hands, with the palms facing each other, beat up and down the area being massaged, like a karate chop. Strike the area you’re massaging lightly with the outer edge of your hands alternating your hands quickly. The motion must be fast. Keep your wrists loose and relaxed so that the hands lightly bounce on the muscle.
Pounding Make loose fists and use the same edge of your hand that you used in hacking the fist give added pressure to the stroke.

Cupping The hands and fingers are curled into a cup shape, and with the palms facing downward, you then strike the area you are working. You should hear a popping sound like a horse trotting. If it sounds like a slap it feels like one too, so cup you hands a little more. Cupping is especially good to do over the lungs of someone who is congested. Have them lay face down and cup their back over their lungs. It will help them expectorate the mucus. Percussion strokes take some practice to do correctly and you will probably not use them often with a sensual massage. They are best used at the end of a sensual massage when you partner wants to be alert and invigorated.
